Qantas Airways on 20 March said it would roll out AeroMobile’s
inflight connectivity solution on a number of domestic Boeing
767-300 and Airbus 330-200 aircraft beginning late 2008.
Passengers will be able to send and receive SMS messages via
their GSM cell-phones and e-mails via GPRS-enabled portable devices
and laptop computers.
Voice connectivity will not be activated as part of the service.
Qantas conducted inflight trials of the service between April
2007 and January 2008 on one B767-300 aircraft.
In January 2008 AeroMobile reported more than 19,000 passengers
had used the service.
Qantas and its partners are working with the Civil Aviation Safety
Authority (CASA), Australian Communications and Media Authority
(ACMA), and other agencies to ensure the system is operated in
accordance with Australian regulatory and legal requirements.
